24-Hour Emergency

The 6th most frequently cited OSHA standard in fiscal year 2013 (October 1, 2012 through September 30, 2013) was Powered Industrial Trucks, General Industry (29 CFR 1910.178).

It is a violation of Federal law for anyone UNDER 18 years of age to operate a forklift or for anyone OVER 18 years of age to operate a forklift who is not properly trained and certified. Midwest Environmental Services recognizes that individuals without the training and certification may operate a powered industrial truck only under the direct supervision of persons who have the necessary knowledge, training, and experience to train powered industrial truck operators and evaluate their proficiency.

Determining the best way to protect workers from injury largely depends on worksite conditions and the type of industrial truck being operated. Midwest Environmental Services suggests that employers ensure the operator is competent to operate a powered industrial truck safely, as demonstrated by the successful completion of training and evaluation specified in the regulations.

Midwest Environmental Services offers training consisting of:

  • Formal instruction including lecture, discussion, interactive computer learning, video tape and written material
  • Practical training including demonstrations performed by the trainer and practical exercises performed by the trainee
  • Evaluation of the trainee’s skill level during operation to verify competent equipment control
